Get Acquainted With...The Sirens Call
We sat down with The Sirens Call ahead of their upcoming night at Kapsule Club where they’re set to host none other than Dresden (Ivan Smagghe and Manfredas)
In just under a year, the collective have wasted no time making their mark on rhe city throwing parties with the likes of Vladimir Ivkovic, Tia Cousins and Optimo (Espacio). Each event feels like a carefully crafted moment and as we move into club season their next party with Dresden is shaping up to be no exception.
At the heart of The Sirens Call are Mark Manley, Ezra McConachie, Tom Flaherty, and Emmett Gallagher, four friends and selectors whose energy spills over not just in their parties but also in their monthly Svara Residencies: Love Machine, Unidentified Flying Objects, Mark Manley, and Emmett G.
Together they've built something that feels both intimate and ambitious, with a strong community that's growing with every party.
What sparked the idea behind The Sirens Call? Was it a lightbulb moment or more of a slow burn between friends?
It was a bit of both, a slow burn that finished with a lightbulb moment. It was something that kept coming up in conversation between all of us. We love Liverpool’s nightlife and there is some amazing parties going on in the city that we all really enjoy but there were some musical itches that needed scratching and we thought let’s just do it ourselves!
The name was a lightbulb moment, you can read into it however you want with mythical sirens, sirens blaring, this mortal coil or New order but we knew it just felt right.
It’s not the easiest time to be promoting events, what keeps you motivated when the going gets tough?
We have always believed that there’s no point in throwing parties just because you want to throw parties or just want somewhere to DJ. Making a positive contribution to Liverpool’s nightlife and culture is what keeps us motivated, it’s something we all believe needs to exist.
We don’t feel people should have to travel to Manchester or London to hear these sounds or DJs, it’s something that should be happening in Liverpool too.
You’ve booked such a wide range of artists and styles but there’s definitely a thread running through your lineups. What’s the common factor that makes you say “Yep thats a sirens booking!”
If it’s a bit different and unusual, something that’s for dancing but also musically interesting. It could be basement sleaze and drug chug but it could also be Japanese dub reggae and Balearic oddities. We have a lot of respect for DJ’s who are doing something different from the cultural norm, breaking the rules and challenging dancefloors. That’s where the good stuff is.
You’ve all got your own style and story, but it seems to work together as a group. How do you balance keeping your individual artistic visions while still creating a shared identity under The Sirens Call?
If it feels good do it, if it sounds good play it. The combinations of the different individual artistic visions is what becomes the shared identity. The variety of sound. In terms of visual identity we believe that artwork should be just that, an actual work of art. In that sense Hugo does an amazing job creating imagery that’s totally unique to us. It’s well worth checking out his artwork at Tudomal, his music production work and DJ’ing as Capablancas and his great record label Discos Capablancas.
Looking ahead, what’s next for The Sirens Call? Any dream bookings, new spaces, or surprises you’re ready to tease?
Club season is set to be incredibly exciting, we have a venue takeover to be announced with one of our favourite Berlin DJ’s as well as our 1st Birthday coming up just before Christmas. We may have one or two tricks up our sleeve still to come too so follow us on our Instagram to stay in the know.
